OPINION: Native American History Month at a land grant institution

We live and study on stolen land.

I love the weeks after Thanksgiv-ing. Everything flies by in a blur of cookie-baking, cocoa-drinking and ornament-decorating events, brighten-ing the stressful weeks before finals. Of all the things that COVID-19 has taken from us, pictures with Santa in the ISUB should probably fall pretty low on the list. It just seems like we deserve a normal holiday season after this difficult year, but instead we’re being encour-aged to bunker down at home with our families until January.
For many LGBTQ+ individuals, the conventional family unit does not provide enough emotional stability and understanding to support the everyday stresses members of the community face. For this reason, the concept of the “chosen family” is critical to the well-being of the individual.
Since June, Moscow’s mayor and local officials have had an ordinance requiring face masks in public. Just a little over an hour away, where I live and go to school at the University of Idaho satellite campus, is the lake and resort town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Here and in the surrounding cities of Rathdrum, Post Falls, Hayden, and others there has been little to no mask requirements, except for the few chain businesses and corporations requiring them nationwide.
Men are manliest when they are comfortable in their own masculinity—unrestricted from whatever societal norms imposes on them.
Winter can be a really dismal time of year, especially for those who suffer from seasonal depression, also known as SAD. The short days, lack of decently warm outdoor activities, and financial stress from the upcoming holidays are all parts of winter that I dread every year.
Every fall my mind is taken over by thoughts of how much fun summer is and how sad I am that it’s gone, along with anxiety stemming from the shorter daytime hours and feeling like I’m less productive.
Last week during the election, I spotted an interesting trend going through social media. Online, people were reposting images reading “It doesn’t matter who you voted for this election, we are still friends,” or “Not all Trump supporters are racist, sexist, etc. respect others’ opinions.” The problem with this flawed logic is they seem to claim that politics really don’t matter and are a trivial thing to end friendships over.
Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden has officially become the President-Elect of the United States of America. I couldn’t be happier for the students that grace our campus today.
Some days I felt like I could say what I wanted to say to you, but I wound up not knowing quite how to say it. After months of pondering and gathering my thoughts, I chose to start at the beginning by writing a letter of appreciation in the hope that others will understand how you impacted my life.
Let’s talk about Christmas. I’m here to tell you why it is the worst holiday ever created. Let’s move right on past the Christian exclusiveness, the mass marketing, the freedom of religion arguments and just get down to the brass tacks of it all. Christmas is the worst because of how obnoxious it is.
