The Idaho Vandals opened their cross country season with a promising showing at the Clash of the Inland NW, with the men finishing third in the 8K and the women taking fourth in the 6K, giving the team an early look at its strengths while also revealing areas that can improve as the season continues.
For Idaho, the season-opening competition provided an opportunity for athletes to test themselves against outside competition and establish a foundation for the weeks ahead. Several Vandals took advantage of the opportunity, recording personal-best times and emerging as early leaders for their respective teams.
For the women, juniors Jesse Redding and Alex Terry led the way for Idaho in the 6K race. The two runners finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while both establishing new personal records as well.
Redding crossed the finish line in 21:02.4, while Terry followed with a time of 21:17.3. Their performances gave the Vandals two strong results at the front of the field and provided an encouraging start to the season.
The results were particularly significant because Idaho did not have its full women’s lineup competing. Several athletes were held out of the opening competition, leaving the team with additional potential once those runners return to competition.
With more athletes expected to join the lineup, Idaho’s early results suggest the women’s team could become even stronger as the season progresses. The performances from Redding and Terry provide a strong starting point, while the return of additional runners could give the Vandals greater depth near the front of the pack.
The men’s team also received encouraging performances, particularly from a pair of younger runners.
Freshman Miles Lechtenberg made an immediate impact in his first collegiate race, becoming the first Idaho men’s runner to finish the 8K competition. Competing in his first race at the collegiate level, Lechtenberg showed early promise and gave the Vandals a glimpse of what he could contribute throughout the season.
Sophomore Evan Jones followed closely behind and delivered one of the team’s most notable performances. Jones finished with a personal-best time of 24:45.3, marking a significant step forward as he begins his sophomore campaign.
Senior Zac Knapp was the third Vandal men’s runner to cross the finish line, providing experience to a men’s group that features a large number of young athletes.
That combination of youth and experience could become an important part of Idaho’s season. While the younger runners have demonstrated their ability to compete, the team’s returning athletes can provide leadership and help the newcomers adjust to the demands of collegiate competition.
The opening meet also gave the coaching staff an early indication of where the program stands. Rather than viewing the first race as a final measure of the team’s ability, Idaho can use the results as a starting point and identify what needs to improve before the next competition.
For the women’s squad, Redding and Terry have already established themselves as athletes to watch after their top-10 finishes and personal-best performances. Their results could set the tone for a group that expects to become deeper once the remaining runners enter the lineup.
On the men’s side, Lechtenberg’s debut and Jones’ personal record offer reasons for optimism. With Lechtenberg gaining his first collegiate racing experience and Jones building on a breakthrough performance, the Vandals have young athletes who could play increasingly important roles as the season develops.
The opening meet ultimately provided Idaho with both positive results and motivation for what comes next. The Vandals showed they have athletes capable of competing near the front of the field, while the incomplete women’s lineup and inexperienced men’s group leave room for additional growth.
Idaho will now turn its attention to its next competition, which is scheduled for two weeks after the Clash of the Inland NW. With more opportunities to race and additional athletes potentially joining the lineup, the Vandals will look to build on their opening performances and continue developing as a team.
The first meet may not have answered every question surrounding Idaho’s cross country program, but it provided several encouraging answers. Redding and Terry established themselves as strong women’s contenders, while Lechtenberg and Jones gave the men’s team promising performances to build around. As the season moves forward, Idaho will have the opportunity to turn those early individual successes into much stronger team results.
The Vandals Cross Country team will visit Missoula, Montana in the Montana Invite on Friday, September 18.
