The April 2 ASUI meeting was kicked off by monthly reports from directors within the President’s Cabinet. Justin Carpenter, Director of Traditions and Alumni Engagement, shared his excitement for upcoming the alumni and parents’ weekends, including a dueling piano event. Emily Roberts, Director of Safety, Health and Wellness, shared about the upcoming Vandals Against Violence 5K Run, for which registration is now open.
President Martha Smith participated in the International Flag Parade before Cruise the World, which she also attended. Smith also spoke at UI Bound about how great her experience at the University of Idaho has been.
As a Vandal Giving Day ambassador, Smith further announced that the university broke their previous record of donations this year.
Senator Arielle Hebison spoke about the need for improving police involvement with on-campus residence halls, compared to Greek life.
Senator Lance Butikofer announced that amendments of the ASUI constitution for the next year have been officially submitted.
Senator Alexa Benitez has been working on finding ways that ASUI can create true inclusiveness on campus, saying, “[It’s important] to see what ASUI can do to acknowledge different religions and cultures without just doing nothing.”
Hebison sponsored a resolution, authored by Senator Zoha Aqueel, thanking the Cruise the World committee for their outstanding commitment and invaluable service. This resolution will act as a token of ASUI’s deep appreciation for the committee’s dedication to fostering a deep sense of inclusivity on campus. This resolution will be put on the floor for voting at next week’s meeting.
Senator Bryan Juarez Ruiz sponsored a bill, authored by Aqueel, to allocate $400 for tickets for ASUI members to attend Indian night. The bill was motioned to a roll call vote and was passed unanimously.
Senator Julissa McDowell presented a bill, authored by Vice President Emma Johnston, to allocate $750 from Senate funding to sponsor the Senior Sift and Send-Off. The purpose of this bill would be to increase awareness of ASUI and strengthen relationships with students. It would also “let [the seniors] know that we applaud their accomplishments, and they will forever be a part of the Vandal family.” The bill will be referred to its relevant committees and voted on next week.
