Men’s Tennis splits the weekend while women complete the sweep

Men’s Tennis

The Vandals’ Men’s Tennis team was down in California for a couple of matchups, beginning with Saint Mary’s College of California, which UI overtook by a 4-2 decision. They then took on Santa Clara University the following day and were completely shut down in that one, falling 7-0.

Two of the doubles matches ended up being close as Chetanna Amadike and Sebastian Medica were defeated in a narrow 7-5 game. Gabriel Moroder and Yu-Shun Lai tied their doubles match at 6-6 before being defeated 11-9 in the tiebreak. SCU provided a dominant performance in the first match, a 6-1 win contributing to their 3-0 sweep of doubles play and taking a 1-0 advantage.

Santa Clara also won all six games in singles play. The best performance for UI by far came from Francisco Gay, the only unswept Vandal. However, he was beaten in three sets. The men’s tennis squad is now 500 overall at 3-3. The Vandals will be battling Eastern Washington at home on Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.

Women’s Tennis

UI Women’s Tennis was in the Midwest as they traveled to Omaha for a weekend of matches. They began against the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks, sweeping doubles and winning two of the matches by a final of 6-2 and 7-6, 9-7 in tiebreak. Another match went unfinished at 6-6. Each team won three matchups in singles play, but by winning doubles, UI was able to win overall by a 4-3 decision. Diana Khaydarshina, Naomi Schraeder and Valentina Rodas were all victorious for the Vandals in singles.

The next day, UI took on Creighton University where they once again won by a 4-3 decision. The Vandals won two of the three matches in doubles. Lena Beckx and Ida Johansson were the only duo that fell. Just like the day before, each team won three matchups in singles, allowing UI to win the day and sweep the weekend. Hanna Koprowska, Diana Khaydarshina and Lena Beckx all won for the Vandals in singles and held their opponents to four games or less in each set.

Women’s tennis is now at the front of an eight-game home stretch that begins this weekend. Saturday, Feb. 15, they will take on Seattle University inside the Kibbie Dome at 11 a.m. On Sunday, they will play Lewis and Clark State College at 3 p.m. UI is now 4-2 overall on the season.
