Men’s Tennis: The Vandals men’s tennis team took a trip to the state of Oregon on Saturday for a couple matchups. Their first was only an exhibition against George Fox University in Newberg, then they played the Sunday against the Pilots where they fell in a 5-2 decision.
Despite winning the advantage in doubles and jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. The Pilots came out strong in the singles matchups, winning five out of the six matchups and winning the overall match 5-2.
Idaho men’s tennis falls to 1-2 on the season. They will be in California for their next two matchups. Taking on St. Mary’s College on February 8 and Santa Clara University on Feb. 9.
Women’s Tennis
Women’s Tennis travel to California on Friday to take on UC Riverside for duels. The women’s team beat UC Riverside 6-1 in Singles competition and 2-1 in Doubles. On Saturday, they battled UC Irvine and won 5-2 in Singles competition and 2-1 in Doubles. The Women’s Tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season and will host Brigham Young University on Saturday, Feb.1 at 2:30 p.m. at the University Tennis Courts.
Track and Field
The Vandals were able to win eight events in front of their home crowd on including a first place sweep in the men’s and women’s mile run. Senior Zach Bright won the men’s mile with a time of 4:13.35 and senior Katja Pattis won the women’s mile with a time of 4:57.36. The UI women finished the mile in the top two, graduate student Leah Holmgren finished right behind Pattis at 4:59.08.
In the distance relay the Vandals also cleared first place. The men finished atop with a time of 10:09.73 and the women won with a time of 11:56.72. UI also won the women’s 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:47.12. That team included graduate student Franziska Stoehr who also took first in the women’s 400-meter dash with a career time of 0:55.75.
Junior Mia Sylvester won the women’s weight throw, her toss going 19.24 meters. She also took second in the shot put with a distance of 14.42 meters. Junior Joe Reiber took first in the men’s high jump with a distance of 2.05 meters. He also took second in the 60-meter dash, scoring 875 in the final.
UI’s final first place finish was by freshman Jesuye Doherty, who finished first in the men’s long jump with 7.48 meters, which is the top mark in the Big Sky this season. The Vandals also had another second place finish as well. Freshman Shawn Twumasi Ampofo finished second in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 15.12 meters. Freshman Alyssa Marsh and Junior Luca Wagner each won fourth in their events. Marsh in the women’s 200-meter with a time of 0:24.84 and Wagner in the men’s 800-meter with a time of 1:53.92.
Next up for the Vandals they will take part in the University of Washington Invitational in Seattle on January 31. Then February 1 they will be in Cheney for the Clash of the Inland Northwest, hosted by Eastern Washington.
