On Jan. 22, ASUI convened to discuss recently proposed resolutions with a clear theme of outreach and acknowledgment across the board.

Vice President Emma Johnston, President Martha Smith and the Director of Athletics Jack Hatten proposed a resolution meant to thank recently retired football Head Coach Jason Eck for his contributions in coaching the football program.

“Coach Eck has revitalized the football program, inspiring students to become enthusiastic supporters and participants, thereby enhancing the overall athletic experience at the University,” Johnston said.

The resolution formally recognizes and praises Eck for his stellar contributions and commitment to UI athletics over his tenure at UI.

Senator Lance Butikofer discussed his resolution F24-R, which was written to urge university officials to integrate improvements of UI’s Counseling and Mental Health Center into the University of Idaho’s 5-Year Strategic Plan. He placed an emphasis on the physical building that counseling services are presently located in, Mary E. Forney Hall. Both he and Pro Tempore Anya Zuercher discussed that the building is old, unwelcoming, inaccessible and hidden away on campus.

The ASUI has pushed to improve awareness of campus mental health resources by introducing widget cards on the MyUI interface, and they now urge UI to act and “address the inadequate infrastructure and poor accessibility of the Counseling and Mental Health Center.”

With the recent removal of the university’s DEI offices, ASUI members also discussed attendance at the Black Excellence Gala and the importance of participation in events like Taste of Nepal in efforts to experience and appreciate multiple cultures.
