The Vandals (2-4) have struggled to prevent opponents from high-scoring outings, and they are now 0-4 against fellow NCAA programs. In those four games, Idaho has allowed an average of 86.5 points per game. Saturday’s matchup with Southern Utah (6-1) was no different, as the Thunderbirds took the win, 82-67.
The game was not all bad news for the Vandals, as the bench produced a solid 37 points, showcasing the team’s scoring depth. Kyson Rose came off the bench, a decision that clearly paid off as Rose led the team with a season-high 14 points.
Jack Payne also played a great game for Idaho, scoring 12 points with four rebounds and three steals. Payne continues to be a handful for offenses, averaging nearly two steals per game thus far. However, Payne and Rose were the only double-digit Idaho scorers, and the team collectively shot just 43.9% from the floor.
The Western Athletic Conference’s Southern Utah shot nearly 70% in the first half, extending their lead to 17 going into the break. The Thunderbirds made 11 shots from beyond the arc, four of which were courtesy of Dominique Ford, who finished with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Jamir Simpson led both teams with 21 points, also racking up four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
The Vandals remain at the Jenny Craig Pavilion as they prepare for a showdown with the San Diego Toreros on Sunday at 2 p.m.
