Five newly elected senators were announced at this week’s ASUI Senate meeting on Nov. 20. Izaak Krohn, Erika Amaral, Andrea Leal, Zoha Aqeel and Binod Khadka will all be holding office this spring. ASUI President Martha Smith and Vice President Emma Johnston both extended their congratulations.

Justin Carpenter, ASUI Director of Traditions and Alumni Engagement, recently hosted a 5K marathon for the tradition keepers, which he said was very fun, and is looking forward to his future collaboration with the university to decorate a Christmas tree and celebrate the holiday season.

Last week, ASUI members participated in a Veterans’ Day dinner, which Pro Tempore Anya Zuercher said was a huge success.

Senator Byran Juarez Ruiz shared his plans to help organize a Christmas toy drive, most likely after the winter break, in order to help the university be sustainable.

Senator Harrison Brown announced that the financial literacy guide is officially out, and he is currently receiving and applying feedback from various campus groups to refine it even more.

Senator Alexa Benitez has been working with Cory Voss, Director of the Center for Disability Access and Resources, about how ASUI can work with CDAR to provide the most amount of support for students.

A senate bill asking for $150 to be allocated to drinks and snacks for a holiday movie during Dead Week was presented. The goal of this event would be to help students decompress during a week filled with studying and allow them to celebrate the season. The bill was moved to a vote and passed unanimously.

Johnston has been attending various meetings in order to help shape the university’s future, including a strategic planning meeting and a meeting for the Student Recreation Center’s future. She participated in a staff and faculty onboarding day, where she talked to the new hires about how to best support students.

Johnston said that the work and support ASUI members offered on Election Day was well received and congratulated everyone on their hard work.
