President Martha Smith extended her gratitude to all the ASUI members who helped volunteer during Election Day and braved the cold at this week’s meeting on Nov. 6. She said that she is “really grateful for ASUI, generally speaking” but especially during that time.
“Regardless of how the election makes you feel, we can all learn the importance of being involved,” Smith said.
Pro Tempore Anya Zuercher, Senator Julissa McDowell and Senator Lance Butikofer were among the several ASUI members that volunteered on Election Day, and they described how much they enjoyed the experience. Zuercher said that she “had a blast,” while McDowell helped students learn how to register and Butikofer drove golf cart shuttles.
A bill was presented asking for $75 to supply hot chocolate and tea for students who would be visiting the Vandal Healing Garden on Nov. 11. The goal of this bill is to provide students with a sense of comfort while they pay remembrance to those who have passed. The bill was moved to forward and passed unanimously.
Vice President Emma Johnston has continued working on getting UI students to attend the men’s basketball game at WSU in order to show support, build community and foster a sense of togetherness. A bill allocating $500 to purchase tickets for the students to attend this game was passed unanimously.
ASUI acknowledged Kendall Cullen’s work as she moves on to a different position in her career. Cullen worked closely with ASUI members and fostered great relationships with students. The ASUI members felt that she truly cared about them as an organization.
