UI Security report reveals mixed trends in campus crime

Annual document highlights increased and decreased numbers

The University of Idaho’s 2024 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report was released to the public on Sept. 30. 

The report includes statistics from 2021, 2022 and 2023 and, according to the bulk email introducing the report, “includes information concerning reportable crimes that occurred on-campus, in certain off-site buildings or property owned or controlled by UI and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from university property.” 

The report found that the university saw a 36% decrease of burglary since 2021. However, there was still an 85% increase from 2022. 

Robbery was down 25% from 2021 to 2022 and is now down 100% with zero reported robbery incidents this past year.  

There were five aggravated assaults in 2023, with only four in 2022 and just one in the year prior. 

Motor vehicle theft is on the rise, with six incidents occurring in 2023. There was only one in 2022 and four in 2021. 

There have been zero reports of murder, negligent manslaughter and arson in the past three years. 

Reported sex offenses are as follows: 16 counts of rape in 2021, three counts in 2022 and 15 counts in 2023; one count of fondling in 2021, five in 2022 and five in 2023. 

Reported Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) violations include nine counts of dating violence in 2021, two in 2022 and two in 2023; zero counts of domestic violence in 2021, 12 in 2022 and eight in 2023; and 10 counts of stalking in 2021, eight in 2022 and nine in 2023. 

There were no reports of incest or statutory rape.  

There were 54 arrests for liquor law violations this past year, with 53 in 2022 and a high count of 74 in 2021. 

There were a high number of drug abuse violation arrests, with 56 occurring in 2023. There were only 46 arrests in 2022 and 25 arrests in 2021. 

There were three counts of illegal weapon possession arrests this year, with two arrests each in both 2022 and 2021. 

There was one hate crime in 2023, which was intimidation based on race, occurring on on-campus property. 

This report is required of all federally funded universities by The Clery Act. 

It should be noted that this report only includes statistics from within campus limits and does not include other events that took place in the city of Moscow.
