As part of UI’s Katy Benoit Campus Safety Awareness Month, a free screening of the film “Disfluency” will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Theatre in downtown Moscow. The event, presented in partnership with multiple campus entities, aims to raise awareness about campus safety and support for survivors of power-based violence.
“Disfluency” tells the story of Jane, a college senior living with the aftermath of a sexual assault. Through the lens of her study of language and linguistics, the film examines themes of self-doubt, consent and the complexity of trauma. By not depicting the assault itself, “Disfluency” highlights the emotional weight survivors carry while encouraging conversations around survivor advocacy and healing.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will be held featuring “Disfluency” director Anna Baumgarten, along with representatives from local resources that support survivors. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in dialogue on the film’s themes, including trauma, consent and communication.
The Katy Benoit Campus Safety Awareness Month, which takes place every September, is dedicated to promoting a safe, welcoming environment for all members of the UI community. Events and programs throughout the month highlight the importance of campus safety and encourage students to look out for one another. Initiatives like Vandal Green Dot and Connecting U & I emphasize how students and employees can actively contribute to a safer campus through training and peer support.
This event serves as a powerful addition to UI’s ongoing efforts to ensure campus safety, with the screening and panel providing insight into how Vandals can take care of fellow Vandals. To learn more about the screening and event, visit here.
