“A Quiet Place: Day One” is a horror/ thriller prequel to the original movie “A Quiet Place.” It was directed and written by Michael Sarnoski, with the contribution of John Krasinski, who appeared in the first two films.

The third movie revolves around the world before and after extraterrestrial creatures come down to Earth. Samira, played by Lupita Nyong’o, is a terminally ill patient with an emotional support cat named Frodo.

The movie begins with Samira, who a nurse convinces to visit New York City to see a show. Samira, wanting to see the city again, agrees and goes with the other patients and Frodo.

While in the city, there is an increase in police presence and sirens, making the viewer aware that something is amiss. Objects begin falling from the sky and hitting Earth, and the extraterrestrial monsters descend on everyone who makes noise.

Samira learns quickly that she must remain silent to survive. She encounters another survivor named Eric, played by Joesph Quinn, and they try to escape the creatures together as people quickly realize the monsters cannot swim and the water is their only hope.

The movie opens with an influx of noise that slowly decreases throughout until the final scene at the end. This leaves a dramatic impression on the viewer, and you almost want to hold your breath as the movie goes silent.

While this prequel doesn’t seem to have the same suspense and jump scares as the previous movies, the movie is still well worth watching, especially if you liked the first two movies. The beautiful cinematography and the phenomenal acting from Nyong’o and Quinn make this a much-needed watch for the summer.
