ASUI opened a new business on to the Senate floor at this week’s meeting. The first order of business was Senate resolution S24-R01, authored by Director Connel and sponsored by Senator Morton.

The resolution is going towards improving accountability measures for the University of Idaho’s sustainability and climate goals.

UI has dedicated stationarity efforts that ensure the university’s decisions and long-term plans reflect the necessity to combat the threats of Idaho’s changing climate.

The university crafted the Climate Action Plan in 2010, which lists long-term goals for the university to increase its sustainability efforts.

ASUI believes an updated Climate Action Plan will create actions and steps reflecting the recommendations outlined in the 2022 white paper report.

This resolution was introduced but will not be discussed further till next week.

The next resolution put on the Senate floor was S24-R02, authored by Senator Morton and sponsored by Senator Surcher, Senator Schneider, and Senator Smith.

This is a resolution requesting better university compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

UI as a public entity has committed to its mission to provide equitable access for students with both permanent and temporary disabilities to ensure an inclusive educational experience.

ASUI believes the university must adopt new standards to ensure policies, procedures, and facilities are in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

This resolution was presented on the floor and will be discussed further next week.

The last resolution presented was S24-R03, authored by Senator Stampfli and former Senator Bex Rheims, and sponsored by Senators Morton and Aqeel.

This resolution is declaring student solidarity and support for the allied revolutionary forces in Myanmar.

In recent weeks there has been headway gained in the civil war between Tatmadaw and the allied revolutionary forces through Operations 1027.

This comes as part of a larger offensive against the military regime governing parts of the country since the 2021 coup d’état

Within this civil war, there are a significant number of students supporting the revolutionary forces, and the Tatmadaw has executed many unlawfully.

The All-Burmese Students’ Democratic Front has responded dutifully in self-defense, demonstrating against the military regime and participating in armed resistance.

ASUI expresses solidarity with the revolutionaries and students in Myanmar and implores all students at the university and outside to do the same.

“We express our support for the All-Burmese Students’ Front and allied revolutionary forces without reserve.” The resolution stated. “We denounce the actions of Min Aung Hlaing, and his military clique holding a grip on the nation of Myanmar and will not recognize the status of any entity supporting them, in compliance with current sanctions under the BURMA Act.”

This resolution was presented on the floor and will be discussed further next week.
