ASUI passed two bills this Wednesday. The bill S23-R01 introduced Brandon Brackett as the new director of Student Involvement. The second bill, F22-R02, is an action to encourage students to attend the Borah Symposium. Both bills were unanimously passed.
President McClain talked more about the University of Idaho acquiring the University of Phoenix.
“No student fees or student programming funds will be used in this acquisition. I made sure of that as soon as I heard about the acquisition,” McClain said.
He went on to talk about how this will not increase the cost for students to attend UI.
“My priority is making sure that this is positive for the student body.” McClain further goes on to say, “I see this as a long-lasting impact on the university. [This will] supply more options for students pursuing an education. More options for non-traditional students, and really is a betterment for the state of Idaho, especially for students in rural communities.”
President McClain discusses his plans for the ISUB, “As you all know, there are a lot of empty wall spaces around the ISUB, and we are hoping before Christmas break that some students from architecture will come in and paint a mural.”
He also talks about why these plans for the ISUB have taken a while. “[The ISUB] was not constructed for the student union building.” McClain goes on to state that the pandemic put a hold on making the ISUB more of a student space.
“One goal for this year is to establish a theme. A story for this building,” McClain said.
He also talked about a five-to-ten-year plan with hopes of redoing the layout for the ISUB and initiating the plan of ‘Vandalizing the ISUB’.
“Five years from now, I hope this building is unrecognizable in a positive way. I hope it reflects a true student union building,” McClain said.
President McClain also talks about a new office opened in the ISUB.
“Director Sherman and I will be creating a process which is open to all organizations, that want a new space, which will be narrowed down to one in about two months or so.”
More information on how to apply to acquire the space will be available soon.
Four new senators were introduced in the meeting, and three were sworn in: Palak Pandey, Jack Schneider, Aneesha Shrestha, and Kaylee Mcculloch.
