Katy Benoit Safety Awareness month is back again to remind students here at the University of Idaho of her story and where to find safety.
Katy Benoit was a student here at UI. Back in 2011, she was tragically murdered by a professor she had intimate relations with. Every September, her story is retold and remembered at the UI as she is a symbol of safety for students in any kind of danger.
On Sept. 6, UI held a resource fair at the ISUB plaza for students to start off the month. There was a booth for Violence Prevention Programs, Alternatives to Violence and The Women’s Center, who’s hosting the Take Back the Night event on Sept.13.
The usual swag, pamphlets and posters were there along with some interactive situations. For example, The Live Well organization filled liquor bottles with water and had students try to pour a shot into a solo cup, teaching kids the subtle dangers inof drinking.
This was just the first of many events to come, empowering students to be educated on what happened to Katy Benoit and how to stay safe on campus.
