What is your favorite memory from the 2022 – 23 academic year?

Hype Homecoming

The 2022-2023 school year was full of lots of ups and downs, and I have so many priceless memories of this past year. One of the moments that stands out the most for me was homecoming weekend this fall. This was the first year that me and my friends really participated in all the homecoming activities, and it was so much fun to see the whole school and community come together to celebrate. From serpentine and the bonfire on Friday, to the parade and football game on Saturday. We stayed busy the whole weekend and it was just a blast. I loved going to the tailgate before the game because there were so many Vandal fans, and me and some friends spent the whole afternoon just hanging out and enjoying the sunshine before watching the game. Nothing particularly memorable happened, but just spending time with friends and being surrounded by all that U of I spirit made it feel like we were part of something bigger. Looking back, I’m grateful for the memories of that weekend, as well as all the other great experiences I’ve had this year.

The thrill of the crowd

My freshman year was up and down from the tragedy that happened to moving nine hours away from home, but I will never regret coming to the U of I. My favorite moments of the school year were definitely watching and covering the sporting events. I wanted to go to a school with a sports community and I made the right choice. From the time I got to campus, I lived and breathed for Vandal athletics, which didn’t make my family of ISU alums too happy. But the crowds, late game heroics, Idaho beating Montana and then getting to the playoffs, all made for a great year for sports. I love and live for sports, which is difficult coming from Idaho Falls. There isn’t really a college atmosphere down there, so the atmosphere of the Kibbie Dome and the city during football season made sports my favorite part of my freshman year at UI. I got to cover and write stories during fall and spring, which is what I have wanted to do all my life.

Bands in Boise

My favorite memory from this school year was going to Treefort music fest in Boise for work. I had the amazing opportunity to travel down to Boise for five days to see a bunch of bands perform for free. I was able to go for free due to working for KUOI 89.3 FM on campus and gaining media access to the event. We were able to interview multiple bands that I had listened to prior to the week, and it was a completely different experience than what I was expecting. One of the bands, King Youngblood, even voiced ideas of visiting Moscow to either perform in town or in the radio station on campus. I wouldn’t have been able to do all of the work or have as much fun as I had without the people I went with, which made the entire event less stressful and more fun. The memories I made during Treefort will live with me forever and keep growing as I continue to work for KUOI.

Finishing that final final

My favorite moments of the 2022-2023 school year were the final few weeks of the spring semester. The last five weeks of the spring semester were some of the most stressful and hectic of my short adult life, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Whether it was an end of the year project, a group project, or something with the Argonaut, I was all gas and no brakes. It was extremely stressful, but in completing everything and getting everything done on time, I proved to myself that I am much more capable than I had previously thought I was. There is something about hard times and enduring them that makes you a stronger and better person, and it can prepare you for even harder times. I learned a lot in those weeks concerning time management and being prepared. Also, it was slightly better knowing that everyone around me was on the struggle bus as well. The best part of the five weeks was the end of it, when everything was complete, I remember sitting at my desk submitting the last final I had, when a warm rush of relief washed all my body, knowing that I completed everything, even though I thought that I couldn’t. It’s a period that I remember quite fondly, even though at the time I was miserable.

Spring Break bonding

Picking just one moment from the 2022 – 2023 school year as my favorite is practically impossible. I watched Idaho beat Montana in the UM press box, saw my favorite artist live in Portland, conducted interviews with so many coaches and student athletes, took a lot of great photos and somehow passed Bio 114. However, if I had to pick just one moment as my favorite, it would be Spring Break. I took a trip to Corvallis, Oregon with a group of friends from Chi Alpha to partner with the Chi Alpha at Oregon State University for “Spring Break Outreach.” During that week, I got to meet so many amazing people, have multiple intentional conversations and create new friendships with people I never expected to create friendships with. This trip took me so far out of my comfort zone, but it was so worth it. Although seeing Watsky live in Portland was a dream come true, and witnessing the Vandals overcome the odds against the 6-0 Griz was electrifying, SBO was so fulfilling, and a trip that I’ll never forget.
