In their final meeting of the year, ASUI met Wednesday to conclude the current legislative session and swear in the newly elected members of the senate and executive branches.
In the final meeting for the 2022-2023 academic year, ASUI expressed gratitude for the service of Sen. Ethan Clemens, Sen. Bex Cornog and Sen. Kennedy LaFountaine. Vice President Madison Fitzgerald also concluded her time at ASUI after having served on the body for the past two academic years. She is set to be replaced by Peyton Loffer, McClain’s former chief of staff, as the vice president for the coming academic year.
In additional personnel changes, Shawn O’Neal’s 19-year tenure at the University of Idaho is coming to a close. O’Neal, who served as the director of student involvement and was an advisor for both ASUI and student media, will be taking on a new role at the American Cancer Society. ASUI also held its first meeting with the newly elected senators and re-elected president, formally inducting all electees into their respective senate and executive positions.
The incoming senators are as follows:
• Sen. Nikhil Gill
• Sen. Mo Jabril
• Sen. Emma Johnston
• Sen. Luella Smith
• Sen. Mason Stampfli
• Sen. Anya Zuercher
After an uncontested nomination, Sen. Emma Johnston will be serving as the president pro tempore for the coming fall semester.
In his final remarks for the concluding session, President Tanner McClain reflected on the years he has spent in ASUI. He expressed pride in what the body has accomplished since he started as a freshman senator and reflected upon the hardships that ASUI, as well as the wider campus community, has gone through in the past few years. To the outgoing ASUI members, McClain expressed gratitude for their service.
“This is the end of an era,” President McClain said. “But as all old chapters close, new ones open and I cannot wait to see where you go and what you accomplish in the years to come.”
