What’s happening at UI this week

Now that the semester has really gotten started, and classes are amping up in difficulty, it’s important to take time to relax and have fun to avoid getting overwhelmed. There are plenty of University of Idaho events and activities happening this week to give Vandal students a well-deserved break, as well as an opportunity to learn something new.  

Remembering Hiroshima   

The Idaho Asia Institute is hosting a series of events Sept. 12-14 dedicated to the remembrance of Hiroshima and the consequences that followed.   

The first event will be Hiroshima: Nuclear Truth and Consequence, a briefing on the events leading up to the bombing at Hiroshima given by ROTC cadet Andrea Kelsey on Monday from 2–3 pm in the Aurora room of the ISUB.   

On Tuesday two speakers will be in the ISUB Clearwater/Whitewater room. Syracuse University Architecture Professor Yutaka Sho will be speaking at 10:30 a.m. regarding rebuilding after a nuclear war. At 2:30 p.m. the president of Ottawa University, William Tsutsui, will be addressing the nuclear origins of Godzilla and the monster’s modern relevance.   

Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Center, there will also be a screening of “Gojira,” the original 1954 Godzilla movie.  

On Wednesday, Georgetown University history professor, Toshihiro Higuchi, will be giving a talk at 10:30 a.m. in the Pitman Center Borah Theater regarding the environmental impacts of Hiroshima.   

At 4 p.m., Hiroshima Survivor Keiko Ogura will be delivering the keynote address, telling her story and advocating for peace. The address will be followed by a discussion panel with all the previous speakers.   

There is also an exhibit in the UI Library celebrating Japanese culture and promoting Hiroshima remembrance for interested students to view.  

  

Outdoor Program Events  

For students interested in learning how to rock climb outdoors there is a Gym to Crag: Anchor Building class starting this Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. in the Climbing Center. The cost is $40, including equipment, instruction and transportation to the outdoor class on Sept. 20.Students can register in the Outdoor Program office for this exciting learning opportunity. For anyone interested in kayaking, from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the University Swim Center there is an Intro to Whitewater Kayaking Clinic and an Open Kayak pool session from 7-9 p.m. as well. The clinic will teach the fundamentals of kayaking and costs $40. The open session is for experienced kayakers to practice in a pool for $5.   

Sports  

Vandal Women’s Soccer will be facing off against North Dakota State University Friday, Sept. 16 in the Kibbie Dome starting at 6 p.m. Vandals can also root on UI football as they face off against Drake University at noon in the Kibbie Dome.   

Education Abroad Fair  

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the ISUB plaza anyone interested in study abroad can talk with staff and students to learn more. Attendees can discover possible scholarships, find out if study abroad is the right fit for them and have the chance to win a raffle prize.
