Summer can mean some extra free time spent watching movies with friends, and summer 2022 has no shortage of great new movies to catch in theaters and on various streaming platforms.
For anyone looking for something new to watch this summer, check out this list of some of the biggest upcoming movies premiering within the next few months. Everything from romance, to horror, to action blockbusters and even some book-to-movie adaptations, there is something for every movie lover.
- “The Princess”
This film starring Joey King has been described as a fantasy/action/comedy with lots of dark humor and hard-hitting action. Directed by Le–Van Kiet, the film follows a princess who is imprisoned in a tower after refusing to marry a court tyrant and decides to fend for herself. “The Princess” is now available for streaming on Hulu and will surely be a film to remember.
- “Thor: Love and Thunder”
For Marvel fans, this highly anticipated return of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor may be the highlight of the summer. This next installment of the Marvel franchise, directed by Taika Waititi, also stars Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman returning as Jane.
The plot picks up after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” where Thor seeks to find himself again and works together with old friends to stop a new villain who wants to destroy all the gods. “Thor: Love and Thunder” premieres July 8 in theaters everywhere.
- “Where the Crawdads Sing”
Coming to theaters July 15, this haunting and beautiful coming of age story based on the bestselling novel by Delia Owens will be hard to forget. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays a young girl who was abandoned and found a way to survive alone in the rural marshlands of North Carolina.
She becomes a local legend, and years later, when her ex’s dead body is found, she becomes the main suspect. Directed by Olivia Newman and produced by Reese Witherspoon, this film includes new original music from Taylor Swift. It is a must-see for mystery lovers and anyone who has read the novel.
- “Persuasion”
Based on the 1817 Jane Austen novel, this most recent “Persuasion” adaptation will delight Austen fans and anyone who loves period dramas. Directed by Carrie Cracknell and starring Dakota Johnson, the film portrays the classic love story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth.
Ex fiancés who cross each other’s paths after seven years apart must come to terms with their feelings and what society expects of them. The film will be available on Netflix beginning July 15.
- “Nope”
Fans of horror and sci-fi will be interested in this new Jordan Peele film starring Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya. It follows the residents of an isolated rural California town who witness an unexplained event that sparks terror and hysteria. Little is known about the plot, but the premiere in theaters July 22 is not one to miss.
- “The Gray Man”
This new action-packed Netflix film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, follows a top CIA operative who uncovers dark agency secrets and whose psychotic former colleague then puts a bounty on his head, starting an intense global manhunt.
There are some huge names in this thriller/action film, including Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Rege-Jean Page. Based off the book series by Mark Greaney, this is definitely a hard-hitting action movie people will not want to miss as it releases on Netflix July 22.
- “Bullet Train”
Another high-octane thriller, “Bullet Train,” directed by David Leitch explores what happens when five skilled assassins find themselves on the same train with the same mission. Starring Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock, this movie based on the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by Kotaro Isaka, premieres in theaters Aug. 5.
- “Resurrection”
Anyone looking for a deeply disturbing psychological thriller to watch this summer should look no further. Directed by Andrew Semans and starring Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth, this horror film follows a successful single mom whose life takes a terrifying turn after a monster from her past reappears. Premiering Aug. 5 in theaters, this film will be a hard one to forget.
- “Day Shift”
This Netflix comedy/horror/action directed by J.J. Perry has a little of everything. Starring Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco and Snoop Dogg, this film follows a hardworking blue-collar dad who also happens to be a vampire hunter. With plenty of action, humor, and violence, everyone will want to tune in to Netflix Aug. 12 when it premieres.
