ASUI writes resolution opposing White House executive order

Bite-sized highlights of the Oct. 21 ASUI Senate meeting.

Responding to the White House’s race and sex stereotyping executive order

  • President Trump signed an executive order combatting diversity training and other workplace practices which work to prevent discrimination.
  • ASUI’s resolution, written by Hannah Spear and sponsored by Senate Pro-Tempore Aaron Bharucha, states ASUI is in support of “data-driven equity and inclusion trainings in ASUI and the University of Idaho,” standing in opposition to the executive order.
  • ASUI Vice President Joseph Garrett discussed “Critical Race Theory” and how diversity training may perpetuate negative stereotypes and decrease diversity.
  • There will be a more in-depth discussion next meeting, Oct. 28.
    • The resolution will be voted on Oct. 28.

Urging all Greek houses to become ADA accessible by 2025

  • Senator Dylanie Frazier and Pro-Tempore Bharucha proposed a resolution to recommend all Greek houses start plans to become ADA accessible in the coming five years.
  • Several Greek members on ASUI Senate discussed concerns of feasibility.
    • To become ADA accessible, living space, a bathroom, the dining hall and the chapter room must be on the first floor. For some chapters, this is not possible without an elevator.
  • The resolution states Greek houses should be fined $500 if they refuse or fail to attempt an action plan.
    • This is not a mandate enforced by ASUI, but an encouragement and written statement of support. If the resolution passes, Greek chapters will not be required to become ADA accessible, but are encouraged to.
  • The resolution will be voted on during the next meeting, Oct. 28.

Men’s Mental Health Month care packages

  • Senators Kallyn Mai and Mark Currier are planning to give out hotel-size shampoos and conditioners while tabling in the ISUB, as well as giving bundles to Greek chapters, to promote Men’s Mental Health Month.
  • Bill F20-B09, allocating $300 to the project, was unanimously passed by ASUI Senate.
    • Any additional funds not used to purchase shampoo and conditioner will be used to purchase Redbull and candy. Funds not used after that will be redistributed into the ASUI rollover budget.

ASUI Senate meets at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the ISUB or over Zoom.
