All University of Idaho classes and events for Moscow-based students will be held using remote or online learning formats only for Tuesday and Wednesday.
UI Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Torrey Lawrence and UI Vice President for Finance and Administration Brian Foisy sent an email to Moscow-based faculty, staff and students with updates regarding university operations as wildfire smoke covers campus.
“Not only is (the smoke) a health concern for our Vandal family but it also causes significant issues with our air handling systems,” the email stated. “The thick smoke clogs filters which can lead to significant damage. Most air handling systems were shut down today in an effort to avoid damage.”
Those able to work from home are encouraged to do so and notify their supervisors. No paperwork will be needed to do this for the next two days, according to the email. Those unable to work from home effectively should contact their supervisor to request eligibility for paid administrative leave.
Furlough hours may be taken in place of emergency closure hours for Monday. However, one or the other must be selected on the timecard, not both. Those who want to take furlough for Tuesday and Wednesday must talk to their supervisors for approval.
Student and temporary employees are not eligible for paid administrative leave. If work can be accomplished remotely, the employee should work with their supervisor. Essential employees are required to work on campus as usual. COVID-19 testing will continue in the Student Recreation Center as planned.
Residence halls and the Hub will continue as usual, but computer labs will only be accessible online. Those struggling with with course-related needs should reach out to instructors. Otherwise, questions can be directed to [email protected].
The air handling systems of several buildings on campus have been shut down due to the air quality. Some of these buildings will be locked and access to entry will be blocked. A full list of these buildings was provided in an earlier Argonaut article. Those who need access to a research area can email [email protected] and those who need items retrieved can email [email protected].
Plans for Thursday and Friday will be announced by 1 p.m. Wednesday.
“Please keep COVID-19 protocols in mind – wear your face covering, social distance and wash your hands,” the email stated. “These changes are not an opportunity to travel away from Moscow. If the smoke is affecting your health, please contact your healthcare provider or the Vandal Health Clinic.”
This article has been edited to clarify events and classes will be held remotely, not cancelled.
