With the current pandemic, there are opportunities normally available for students that have been put on the backburner or are not an option. Baby Shark Tank is one event that will offer students more opportunities under current circumstances.
The Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) is holding its inaugural CAES Annual Pitch Event (CAPE) focusing on student-led pitches to “help transfer the innovation and research that thrive at CAES from the laboratory to the commercial sector,.” according to their website.
The event is for all levels of ideas and pitches and is open to faculty, undergraduates and Idaho National Laboratory researchers. The participants will also receive training regarding the methods of CO*STAR and RIIS. CO*STAR stands for Customer, Opportunity, Solution, Team, Advantage and Results whereas RIIS stands for Rapid Idea Improvement Session.
To participate in the competition, registration will be from Aug. 4 to Aug. 19. Pitches must be sent in paragraph format on Aug. 21. After, CO*STAR will require a two-hour training session that can be attended on Aug. 24 and Aug 25. In the training session, patrons will create a draft slides and edit their pitches used in RIIS. RIIS will be from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2 and require a one page submission incorporating RIIS feedback. A virtual pitch competition will be held the week of Sept. 21.
The competition promises a cash prize for the higher-placing participants. First place will receive $1500, second will receive $1000, third will receive $750 and the People’s Choice gets $500 in cash.
