University of Idaho President C. Scott Green sent an email to faculty, staff and students June 2 in response to the death of George Floyd. On June 4, Green sent a follow-up email to clear up some misunderstandings.
“Asking that we treat each other with kindness and compassion was perceived by some as a request not to engage when we witness racism or injustice,” Green said in the second email.
Soon afterwards, the Office of Multicultural Affairs began the Black Lives Matter Speaker Series, featuring Bakari Sellers, Shaakirrah Sanders and Samuel Newton at first. Others have since spoken at affiliated events. The Department of Student Involvement released a page of resources on its website listing books, podcasts, shows, documentaries, articles, events and more content from Black creators on the issue of racial inequality.
ASUI President Lauren Carlsen said she was happy with the follow up email and speaker series. Carlsen hopes for ASUI to partner with OMA in the fall to plan similar events, as she likes spreading awareness and engaging the community.
In early June, when the Black Lives Matter movement resurfaced following the killing of George Floyd, Shawn O’Neal, director of DSI, said there was significant interest in the community for information on racial justice. This was why DSI provided resources on its website.
“I believe it would provide a starting point for people who were looking for answers,” O’Neal said. “We have conversations, we examine the world we’re in and we try to find ways to make it better.”
A large part of the department’s job is helping students make sense of what’s happening in the world by giving them a means to educate themselves and a place to engage in conversations, O’Neal said.

I am having a hard time understand why the U of I is promoting BLM a Marxist organization and devoted (as stated on their webpage) to their destruction of the nuclear family.
Moscow local
These are great starts, yes. BUT a bigger, more substantial move would be to cancel UIs contract with Moscow PD. Contract is up for renewal this September. Moscow PD has not lived up to their end of the bargain and this could save UI millions.
