June 27, 1921
A new requirement was implemented in 1921 for all freshmen to take “intelligence tests.” These tests were described as similar to those given to people entering the army. A professor of philosophy and psychology led this initiative.
“The purpose is to provide an additional means for properly planning college courses, with the hope of eliminating waste of student’s time and money,” he said. “These intelligence tests may also be used as a check on the efficiency of teaching and to determine the degree of intelligence necessary to pursue various courses offered at the university.”

Many choose to cut and dye their hair at home because they see professional salons as an unnecessary expense. This advertisement for Bill’s Barber shop advertises prices for haircuts. Nowadays, there are few places someone can get their hair done for $10, but all of these advertised prices were under $10.
June 26, 1986
Students spend their summers in many ways. This article outlined a growing desire to take advantage of UI’s “learn and earn” program. The program allowed students to take summer classes while working in a work study position.
June 22, 1994
Biking around the UI campus can be a fast way to get to class. This article outlines bikes may be removed from campus if they aren’t parked in the proper spots.

Construction is a necessary inconvenience. These photos from former Argonaut staff member Ruth Snow showcases construction projects set to be completed by the spring semester of 2001. The headline describes the situation as a “bumpy road.” Many students felt that way at the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.
