Makeshift Drink Monday: iced coffee

Emily Pearce | Argonaut

Iced coffee is a staple option when going to any coffee shop. It is a morning essential before work, school or just for lounging around.

Any caffeine addict is familiar with this drink and swears by it. Nothing is simpler and more satisfying than an iced coffee. This drink is one of the easiest to make at home, if there is access to drip coffee and ice, this can be made quickly at any time.

Fun fact, according to coffee magazine, the first iced coffee was called mazagran and originated in Algeria. On a French military base during the Battle of Mazagran, they ran out of milk and added water to their coffee. It was served iced to combat the heat. The drink was invented back in 1840 and has become a staple ever since.

What you’ll need:

  • Ground coffee
  • French press, Keurig or method for brewing coffee
  • Ice
  • Creamer or milk
  • Sugar
  • Tall glass
  • Spoon

Start by brewing the coffee. There are a variety of ways to brew coffee, as long as it is drip coffee it will work. I used a Keurig and brewed eight ounces of dark roast coffee.

Take a 16-ounce glass and fill it all the way up to the brim with ice. Without a lot of ice the drink will become lukewarm and watered down.

Take the brewed coffee and pour it over the ice. For best results chill the coffee for 15 minutes. However, in a time crunch, this isn’t necessary.

Add of creamer or milk until satisfied. Add two tablespoons of sugar and mix the drink with a spoon.

Bam, iced coffee for a caffeine fix.
