The University of Idaho Library announced earlier this week books checked out to students will now be due by June 1, 2020.
This extension is for books checked out from the UI Library or through Summit, but interlibrary loan dates may be different.
“We felt that as long as classes were online and campus buildings were closed, especially with the timing … We thought, this is within our, our ability to do and so let’s just take this and extend it to give people a little bit of extra breathing room,” Kristin Henrich, associate dean of the UI library said,
Along with extending the due dates for all books, the library will be waiving all fines accrued after March 9.
The library website said this does not apply to lost or damaged books — those will still receive fines.
Books can be returned through the exterior book drop off until June 1 or be mailed to the library. Staff will not be in the building to process returns until June, according to the library website.
For textbooks professors put on hold for students, Henrich said they are working on getting electronic versions if there isn’t already one.
“If students are used to coming to the library for physical items that their instructor put on reserve for a class. We’re working to buy electronic versions of those things. So, if they used to come to the library for their math textbook. Just email us and we’ll see if there’s an e-book version we can get,” Henrich said.
The library is also extending reference desk virtual hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The library is also offering virtual meetings for the Gary Strong Curriculum Center that are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
Tutoring, the Writing Center, and the Statistics Assistance Center are offering virtual meetings as a replacement.
