The University of Idaho Interfraternity Council sent a warning to at least one fraternity chapter this week in response to evidence of continued social activity.
The Barstool Idaho Instagram page, an affiliate of the company Barstool Sports, posted and subsequently deleted a video that implicated students of social activity. The video, a screen capture from Snapchat, shows a student holding a phone to his ear and speaking. Text on the video reads “no mom im staying here for the semester.” (sic) At least ten people can be seen close to each other in the video, counting the person filming.
The video was posted on March 24, a week after IFC suspended social activities within the Greek community and 11 days after the City of Moscow declared a state of emergency. Gov. Brad Little issued the stay-at-home order a day after the video was posted.
IFC President Joseph Brueher said the council became aware of the video on March 25 and discussed possible consequences. The IFC emailed the relevant chapter on April 1 with a warning stating evidence of the social activities, clarifying the City of Moscow’s emergency ordinance and emphasizing the importance of following guidelines, such as social distancing.
Brueher declined to provide the name of the relevant chapter. However, comments on the video tagged two students, implying they were at the party. And in those students’ Instagram profiles, they identified themselves as members of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. These individuals declined to comment for this story.
“We just basically recommend people to follow university policy and legal orders from local, state and federal government,” Brueher said. “It’s an unpredictable time at the University of Idaho. However, we’re fully supportive of measures taken to protect the welfare of the Vandal family and beyond.”
