Every week we will be showcasing articles from various years from 1898 to as current as last year.
Taking a look back to see what was going on in past years is a great way to gain insight into what the world was like from that year. The University of Idaho Library has a website that includes PDFs of printed issues of The Argonaut. Anyone can look through these at any time..

April 9, 1913
This short article previewed an annual event that many looked forward to during the year. That school dance seemed to be a highlight of the year for many at the time.
April 12, 1921
This article describes that a UI play, “Clarence,” would be put on during the weekend. The cast and crew of that play traveled from Wallace, Idaho, to Kellogg, Idaho and to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The article described how these showings were something each town looked forward to.
April 8,1927
This article details the election of different ASUI officers. With UI in the middle of current ASUI elections, this article is fun to look back on.
April 11, 1939
The Vandaleers, UI’s prestigious choir group, hold a special place in many UI students, alumni, staff and faculty’s hearts. This article is a nice way to look back at what The Vandaleers were up to this week in 1939.
April 13, 1948
This small article is on the front page of this week’s 1948 issue. It gives some insight into the life of the Argonaut staff members at the time. This two-paragraph story should give many people a laugh.
April 6, 1965
William F. Johnston, the managing editor of the Lewiston Morning Tribune at the time, and Dorothy Rochon Powers, reporter and columnist for the Spokesman Review at the time, discussed what they believe are important aspects of journalism in 1965.
April 10, 1973
This feature of Moscow Senior Citizen’s Club describes how 130 senior citizens in Moscow stay active. The club fees were a dollar a year. Imagine having club fees that low today.
April 7, 2000
In 2000 the Idaho Student Union Building, formerly known as the Idaho Commons, was dedicated. This building became the center of campus activity and continues to be to this day.
April 12, 2012
Former Argonaut reporter, Jacob Dyer, wrote how Linda Gerber from Operation Military Kids encouraged people to wear purple in recognition of the children of citizens in the military. April has been the month of the military child since 1986.

April 9, 2019
This week marks one year since the flood that affected many in Moscow. The rain started with a drizzle in the morning but led to a downpour by late afternoon. This article by former Argonaut reporters Brandon Hill and Kyle Pfannestiel features a photo and video of what the streets looked like during last year’s flood.
