The University of Idaho Dean of Students Office held a Facebook Live on Monday to update the community and answer questions regarding UI’s response to COVID-19.
Led by Blaine Eckles, vice provost for student affairs and dean of students, the live event addressed students’ concerns about graduation, housing and academic resources.
Eckles began by saying it breaks his heart to see campus completely empty when it’s an otherwise vibrant time on campus.
“Some people think we’re over-reacting, some think we haven’t done enough,” Eckles said. “We’re working hard and diligently as an institution and remain in constant communication with Idaho Public Health.”
Moscow public health officials are confident COVID-19 is already here and anyone experiencing symptoms should call their health care provider first before going in, Eckles said. There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Latah County. However, nearby Whitman County recently confirmed two cases.
Should COVID-19 make its way to UI’s campus, Eckles said a Vandal Alert would notify students and faculty.
Eckles said UI would actively engage with the diagnosed individual and give them guidance on what to do and how to self-quarantine.
If someone in a residence hall tests positive for COVID-19, they will move into a quarantined location within the residence building. Eckles said he can’t see a scenario where they would move all students.
“If you are an international student or someone who has nowhere else to go, we will take care of you,” Eckles said. “You will not be kicked out.”
Regarding access to the internet and other resources, Eckles said the university would do everything they can to make sure buildings are open so students can access what they need.
Eckles urged those watching the live stream to communicate with faculty members directly and be patient with them in this transition. Students should file a CARE Report if they need assistance or want to report concerns about faculty or staff members.
Students will still have access to the food court, counseling services, Safe Walk and the Vandal Health Clinic. There are also five Vandal Food Pantry locations available across campus for those in need.

One commenter asked whether students graduating this semester will receive a refund for cap and gowns. Eckles said students can receive a refund for cap and gowns so long as they haven’t opened their package.
