The City of Moscow declared a state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) through a public Facebook post Friday evening. The state of Idaho declared a state of emergency earlier in the day.
“Events leading the consideration of this proclamation include federal, state and local declarations in addition to growing concerns of COVID-19 cases suspected in the greater Palouse area,” according to the press release.
The announcement said city officials have been working on preparing the city for a potential outbreak.
“Additionally, the City may pass ordinances and make all regulations necessary to preserve the public health; prevent the introduction of contagious diseases into the City; make quarantine laws for that purpose, and enforce the same within five (5) miles of the City, according to Idaho Code Section 50-304,” the press release said.
The full City of Moscow Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Plan, Disaster Management Plan Annex has been updated and is currently on the website.
Latah County released a statement saying all buildings will be wiped down with hospital grade disinfectant. They are also asking city employees who feel sick to stay home.
