The NCAA announced Thursday that all Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments along with the remaining winter and spring championships are cancelled due to coronavirus, according to the NCAA.
“Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships,” a statement from the NCAA said. “This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”
This will be the first time that a men’s and women’s champion will not be decided since NCAA postseason play began, according to a USA Today article.
The SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12, Big 12, Big West Conference, Mountain West Conference, and others have canceled spring sports until further notice. There are no reports on whether the Big Sky Conference will cancel spring sports at this time.
