A weekend of action for Vandal Athletics featured men and women’s basketball, tennis and golf. The Idaho women’s basketball team finished the season with a win against Idaho State and secured the No. 2 seed in the Big Sky Conference. The Idaho men’s basketball team secured a win on senior day.
Men and women’s tennis hosted Weber State on Friday, with the men coming out on top. On Saturday, the men hosted Idaho State and the women hosted Southern Utah with both teams coming out with a win.
Women’s golf defeated Boise State 219-223 in St. George, Utah, on Saturday, while men’s golf competed in the first day at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon, on Sunday.
Women’s Basketball
Idaho (20-9, 15-5 BSC) defeated Idaho State (17-12, 13-7) 61-50 on Friday night in the Battle of the Domes, increasing their win streak to five to close out the season. The teams swapped leads for the majority of the first half, but multiple scoring runs in the third period increased the Vandals lead going into the fourth. Junior forward Natalie Klinker recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Natalie was voted as the Big Sky Player of the Week for her performance.
Men’s Tennis
The men’s tennis team overcame a three-point deficit and defeated Weber State 4-3 to pick up their first win in the BSC. The Vandals lost all three doubles matches to lose the doubles point but won four out of the six singles matches and picked up the win.
“The guys showed really good resilience as they came back from 0-3. It was some great tennis and a lot of fun to watch,” Idaho head coach Daniel Hangstefer said.
On Saturday, the Vandals defeated Idaho State 4-3. After clinching the doubles point, the Vandals won the final point with a singles win from freshman Vivek Ramesh in the No. 6 spot. Ramesh won the deciding point in the match, defeating Kyle Hartman 6-1, 7-5.
Women’s Tennis
The women’s team had mixed results after facing Weber State on Friday and Southern Utah University on Saturday. Weber State defeated Idaho 6-1 on Friday, but on Saturday, the Vandals clinched a 6-1 game against Southern Utah.
The Vandals won the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots in singles, with junior Laura Spataro securing her fourth singles win of the season. Freshmen Andjela Todorovic and Nicole Horaceck also had a big day, winning their doubles match 6-0 as well as their singles matches.
Men’s Basketball
On Saturday, the University of Idaho’s men’s basketball team faced off against the Idaho State Bengals. With four ties and four lead changes in the first half alone, the Bengals and Vandals kept the game close to the final seconds. The Vandals secured a win on senior day with an 80-76 win in the Battle of the Domes.
Graduate student Quinton Forrest and senior Trevon Allen ended their collegiate careers on Senior Day.
“It’s just huge to come off with a win,” Allen said.
Allen led the team with 33 points and moved to eighth place in the Vandals All-Time Scoring List with a total of 1360 points. Forrest, the team’s rebound leader, scored five points.
Junior Malik Porter, of the Weber State Wildcats, racked up 25 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Going into the BSC Championship, the Vandals are now the No. 10 seed in the BSC. The Vandals will face Southern Utah on Wednesday in the first round of the BSC Championship.
Women’s Golf
The Vandals traveled to St. George, Utah, and defeated Boise State 319-322 on Saturday. The Vandals will compete on Monday and Tuesday in the BYU at Entrada Classic with six Vandals competing.
Men’s Golf
On the first day of the Bandon Dunes Championship, the Vandals ranked 16th out of 16. Freshman Jackson Jacob led the Vandals with 1-over-72 on Sunday. Sophomore Joseph Glenn placed 43rd on the day after finishing the 3-over.
