This Sunday is International Women’s Day which celebrates women’s accomplishments through social, economic, cultural and political means.
This year’s theme is “an equal world is an enabled world.” It focuses on how we can all individually fight biases commonly held against women as well as an overall celebration of all women. Although we all have different ways of doing this, if we are all working in our own way, we can create a world where everyone is treated equally.
There are thousands of ways we as women can celebrate and build each other up. There are countless lectures, celebrations and events that have the theme of celebrating women.
Even if you aren’t a woman you should be celebrating and uplifting women on this day as well as every other day. Bringing these issues to light and discussing them, no matter who you are, brings attention to them and starts conversations.
All in all for change to happen, these conversations need to happen. If they’re not happening those who aren’t affected by them don’t realize how much of an issue they are.
Just because this holiday raises awareness of this issue, it doesn’t mean that we should stop fighting the rest of the days of the year.
Don’t just take photos on social media and share long posts about how women are powerful and strong. Although these are fine things to do, they should not be the only thing you should do.
Do your research and find ways to get involved in your community. Find ways to uplift and help women on an everyday basis. Even though this day is a great opportunity to focus on women and their accomplishments, this recognition shouldn’t just stop with a simple share on social media.
These are very superficial ways to celebrate and uplift women, they can be helpful but they you’re not doing all that you can.
No matter how you celebrate International Women’s Day do it with intention. Don’t just go through the motions of celebrating women and forget about the fight the next day.
