ASUI is set to consider a resolution to end the long-standing tradition of Homecoming fireworks due to health and environmental safety hazards at Wednesday’s meeting.
As more information pours in about hazards to environmental safety, concerns regarding firework use spike.
A resolution created by ASUI senator Mary Alice Taylor, sponsored by Senator Joe Garrett, expresses great worry regarding the particles – defined as “small pollutants like dust, dirt and soot” in the resolution – released into the air from fireworks. This concern for the environmental impacts of particulates extends to individual health as it can contaminate ground water, according to the ASUI resolution.
The resolution further states that Vandals can show vandal pride without fireworks.
More discussion on the resolution is to take place during the ASUI meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The Argonaut will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
