Longtime UI professor dies

Brian Dyre dedicated over two decades to teaching Vandals

Brian Dyre, a University of Idaho associate professor in the psychology and communications department, died Monday.
“He was an integral part of the department and demonstrated daily what it means to be a great colleague,” wrote UI President Scott Green in an email to students, faculty and staff Thursday.
Dyre came to UI as a visiting professor in 1995, staying on in a permanent role the next year.
Dyre earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and psychology in New York, and a masters and doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in experimental psychology.
Dyre’s research interests included visual psychophysics, mathematical modeling of visual displays and virtual environments, and he taught a number of courses at the university. In addition to his teaching, Dyre had an active research program that included highway safety work with National Advanced Transportation Technology and worked with the Canadian Military.
According to the email, Dyre was also a youth hockey coach and a musician in several bands in the area.
Dyre is survived by his wife, Lisa, and two children.
“Our condolences go to his family and friends and to all those who knew Brian,” wrote Green.
Faculty and staff impacted by Dyre’s passing are encouraged to use EAP resources, while impacted students can contact the Counseling and Testing center at 208-885-6716.
