Vandal senior golfer Sophie Hausmann played in the Augusta National Amatuer Women’s tournament at the Champion’s Retreat Golf Club last week.
Hausmann is the top golfer for Idaho and played with some of the best amatuer golfers in the world at this tournament.
“All of them (other players) know how to play the game, you have to realize that par is good, but they will make birdies out there and it’s a little different from collegiate golf,” Hausmann said.
Hausmann finished the first round with a 1-over 73. Shooting just on bogey and one double bogey. Hole four, the 400 yard par 4 caused her trouble where she carded her only double bogey of the day and hole 3, the 175 yard par 3 took her other bogey.
“On the first day I did not hit the ball great,” Hausmann said. “I just focused on getting it in the hole, which worked on the first day, but not the second.”
The rest the 15 holes were pars, barring two holes where Hausmann carded birdies.
During the second round, Hausmann had trouble getting the ball in the hole. She got 7 bogeys and a double bogey but also increased her birdie count by one finishing with three birdies.
Hausmann hit a 6-over 78 for the second round bringing her total score to an 8-over 151 (73-78).
This marked the end of Hausmann’s tournament as the top 30 golfers over the first two rounds play in the third and final round. Sitting in the 46th position, Hausmann did not make the top 30.
“Missing the cut got me a little bummed out but playing on Augusta is a pretty big deal even if you miss the cut,” Hausmann said. “The next day I was on the tee again smiling, it was a good week.”
Hausmann hopes to continue playing high level golf and this tournament opened up doors for her to continue doing so.
“Putting myself in a position where you can compete on top, playing against the best is a huge takeaway,” Hausmann said.
Head coach Lisa Johnson was very proud of her senior.
“Competing against the best amateurs in the world is something she kind of knew, because she competes with them on a monthly basis,” Johnson said. “It was a much larger stage that I think that she (Hausmann) could even imagine and she did a great job.”
