UI Library dean named

Ben Hunter will take over as Dean of UI Libraries before the end of April

Ben Hunter has been appointed as Dean of the University of Idaho Libraries.

UI Provost & Executive Vice President John Wiencek announced the decision Friday afternoon in an email to UI faculty and staff.

Hunter has worked in the UI libraries since 2006 and has served as associate dean since 2014, Wiencek said. The email said Hunter has also served as interim head of user and research services, head of technical services, head of cataloging and collections and a reference librarian.

Hunter holds a bachelor of music degree from UI. Wiencek said Hunter completed a master’s of music from the University of Oregon and a master’s of science in library science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is currently working towards a doctorate in managerial leadership in the information profession from Simmons University, Wiencek said.

Wiencek also said Hunter was a 2011 American Library Association Emerging Leader, that the Library Journal listed him as a 2013 “Mover and Shaker” and that the Idaho Library Association named him 2017 Librarian of the Year.

Hunter will take over as Dean of UI Libraries on April 21, 2019.
