While many Vandals were off campus relaxing, the Idaho Men’s Golf team was hard at work playing in two tournaments over Spring Break.
The Vandals started out with a 13th place finish at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon from March 10th to the 12th.
During this first tournament of the spring season, Idaho worked on scraping the rust off from the winter intersession.
The Vandals brought five main golfers, and senior Klaus Ganter and freshman Joel Veenstra playing as individuals.
Senior Enrique Marin led the pack shooting a 10-over 226 (77-73-76) for the tournament. The put Marin in the top 50 golfers tied for 40th place individually.
Sophomore Travis Hansen was close behind with a 12-over 228 (85-70-73). Hansen’s second round 2-under 70 was the low score for the team.
Freshman Colt Sherrell was just one shot behind Hansen carding a 13-over 229 (78-71-80).
The last scoring Vandal was junior Sean Langham. Langham card constantly improving scores through the three rounds finishing with a 19-over 235 (86-76-73).
Overall, Idaho finished in 13th place with a 48-over 912 (321-290-301).
“I think we showed a lot of poise after Sunday’s round (round one),” David Nhun, head coach said in the press statement. “We’re getting to the point where guys are comfortable competing.”
Nuhn said that he is seeing high level golf during tournaments similar to the practice rounds that the team plays.
The Vandals stayed on the road for March 15 and 16 traveling to Pheonix, Arizona to play the Grand Canyon Invitational.
Idaho saw improvement across the board at this par 71 course.
Idaho had three individuals competing in this tournament including Veenstra, sophomore Cole Chrisman, and freshman Joseph Glenn.
Marin led the pack again shooting a 4-under 209 (68-68-73). With the back to back 3-under 68 scores for the first two rounds, this secured Marin a tie for 11th individually.
Veenstra, who was playing as an individual out of the eight Vandals in this tournament, shot improving scores every round and carding the lowest score on the Idaho team. He tied with Marin for 11th with his 4-under 209 (73-69-67).
Langham was close behind with a 1-over 214 (73-70-71).
Sherrell trailed him with a 5-over 218 (77-68-73).
The fourth and final scorer for the Vandals was Hansen carding a 16-over 229 (77-78-74).
Idaho finished in 12th place overall just 3 strokes behind 11th place Samford.
The Vandals are back at it again at the start of April at the Redhawk Invitational in University Place, Washington. They will compete at one more tournament after before the Big Sky Championships on April 26 through 28.
