As the regular season winds to a close, eyes are turning to the nationally revered March Madness.
While the Idaho women’s basketball team still searches to secure its regular season title ahead of the Big Sky Conference tournament, the NCAA dubbed Idaho as one of five NCAA women’s teams that could pull a major upset in the women’s tournament.
The article notes the women’s 88-77 win over Texas Tech Nov. 17 on the road, one of Idaho Head Coach Jon Newlee’s signature tough preseason matchups and its No. 1 national rank in 3-pointers made per game.
The Vandals currently sit at the top of the rankings with a 13-3 record and have already secured a first-round bye in the conference tournament. Idaho State stands in second, just one game behind, with a Big Sky record of 13-4.
Idaho will secure the regular season title outright if they win out the next four games, beginning with Portland State Thursday in Portland.
While the team chases the regular season title, senior guard Mikayla Ferenz eyes another record — this time at the conference level. The senior standout is just 13 points away from breaking the Big Sky all-time scoring record, men and women’s.
Fellow “Splash Sister” senior guard Taylor Pierce currently leads the nation in 3-pointers made in a season with 114 thus far and third all-time in the NCAA for career 3-pointers made at 432.
