Each semester, the University of Idaho Women’s Center work studies put together a workshop with the help of the rest of the Women’s Center staff.
This semester, Briana Navarro is putting on Privilege Jewelry, an event to help educate and establish where the distribution of privilege is.
“People get to make jewelry based off their privilege, and it sounds kind of discouraging because some people may think that they don’t have privilege but everybody has privilege,” Navarro said.
Navarro said she did this workshop in one of her anthropology classes and after they were done, she said there was a lot of conversation about it and what it meant.
“It’s supposed to be fun and you’re supposed to learn from it but it can sound discouraging,” she said.“I hope a lot of people come and learn more about it..”
Navarro said her goal for this workshop is to start a discussion and to help people understand where privilege comes from.
Jackie Sedano, program coordinator, said studentswho attend the workshopcan travel to different stations and can collect beads based on different statements found at the station.
“It’s basically an opportunity to have a super non-judgmental, open conversation around it and I think that (Navarro) uses the word discouraging because people might be a bit intimidated to talk about it,” Sedano said.
The workshop is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursdayin the Teaching and Learning Center room 229.
