The ASUI Senate passed a bill Wednesday allocating $700 from the ASUI Senate Allocations Budget to help fund travel costs for speakers at the Vote 4 her event, a conference about women in Idaho public office.
The contribution is intended to cover nearly all of the travel costs of three of the speakers attending the event. The event is slated for April 9, Sen. Jacey Bacon told The Argonaut.
A resolution presented last week by Sen. Sam Harrich which called upon the state of Idaho to enact reforms regarding marijuana policy was not considered.
ASUI President Nicole Skinner updated the Senate on Vandalthon, a university-wide dance marathon philanthropy event held Friday, Feb. 15. Skinner said a few thousand dollars were raised from the event, and that an exact number will be released at a later date.
Skinner also presented on the recent legislative trip to Boise where students had a chance to attend bill hearings, speak to legislators about higher education and see how the Legislature operates.
“Gov. (Brad) Little has been speaking out in favor of reforming the Idaho Opportunity scholarship, which is really exciting,” Skinner said. “He’s been advocating that we add seven million dollars to the amount that is already there.”
Skinner also updated the Senate that ASUI has a Student Dispute Advocate, a law student Franchell McLendon. McLendon provides guidance and support for students in matters that could affect academic standing. The advocate also defends students’ rights under the U.S. and Idaho State Constitutions, the Student Code of Conduct and Student Bill of Rights.
A new senator, Colby West, was also sworn in to the Senate Wednesday.
