The University of Idaho Vandal Entertainment puts on a free comedy night for students about twice a year. Last semester it was Erik Griffin from the show “Workaholics.” This spring, it was Jeff Zenisek, an up and coming comedian who is known for his above-average height and weird last name.
This comedian had a full house of students and community members laughing almost the entire performance.
Unlike the majority of the past comedians, he was not political at all. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of comedians can successfully make clever jokes based on what is happening currently in the political world.
However, certain comedians Vandal Entertainment has brought to campus in the past, base almost their entire routine on taking digs at the current president. Zenisek did not do this, which was a breath of fresh air.
Now, this man was no brilliant comic, but he was still able to give an entertaining and memorable performance.
Much of his comedy was about small-town humor, when all you have to do for fun was go to Walmart. He also discussed his dysfunctional childhood, where his mom passed off TV dinners as home cooking.
His relatable humor kept the audience laughing throughout the show. Zenisek also used local restaurants as the basis of some of his jokes, such as Zips and Ross.
Zenisek was not afraid to laugh at his own jokes or the awkward moments that when the audience did not participate. Some standup comics make the situation more awkward when there is no laugher or audience reaction by saying things like “come on these are the jokes people.”
Zenisek also was not afraid to bring in some of the fails he has had in the past. He closed the show by telling a story of how he performed in front of an audience who all had just gone to a funeral.
Overall Zenisek’s quirky and unconventional path to comedy was much of the night’s fun. Zenisek had a unique style of comedy that was all his own.
