The University of Idaho Faculty Senate approved the addition of two new minors to the curriculum at UI during their meeting Tuesday afternoon.
The new minors are a sales management minor and a philosophy, politics and economics minor. Representatives from the business department and politics and philosophy department came before the senate to explain why these options are being added and the potential benefits for students who take advantage of the new course offerings.
Sanjay Sisodiya, a faculty member in the Department of Business, said 40 to 50 percent of marketing students end up working in a sales role out of college. He said the minor in sales will help those students be more prepared to succeed at a career in sales and allow them to understand how a job in that field operates.
Graham Hubbs, the chair of the Department of Politics and Philosophy, pitched the interdisciplinary minor in philosophy, politics and economics. He said the idea behind the minor is that all three fields of study can be enhanced by understanding the other two. Hubbs explained that the subject has been growing in popularity and many universities have implemented philosophy, politics and economics programs.
