Idaho football’s first season in the Big Sky left many questions unanswered going into next season, but it was sprinkled with moments that showed why it might not take long for Idaho to be amongst the Big Sky best.
It seemed as if this Idaho team was a lock to be one of the best four teams within the Big Sky coming into this season. A strong fall camp performance showcased the talents of an up-and-coming receiving core and the makings of what could have been an explosive offense this season.
It is safe to say that the start of the Idaho season did not go as plan, losing two of it’s first three games, one against Big Sky foe UC Davis. The fast paced, up tempo offenses of the Big Sky seemed to catch Idaho off guard a few times throughout the season but when it came to playing in the Kibbie Dome, the Vandals looked like the team they were supposed to be.
Vandal football finished the season with only one home loss on the year — certainly a bright spot for this team that has struggled playing at home in the past.
On the opposite side, the Vandals were not able to win on the road this season, their closest game was against Montana State in a gut-wrenching one-point loss.
One of the biggest storylines throughout the season was Idaho’s duo-quarterback system, flipping between sophomore Colton Richardson and junior Mason Petrino.
Inconsistency was the main tagline when it came to Idaho football this season, primarily at quarterback.
Petrino showcased his abilities more this season, as Richardson did not find any rhythm throughout the year.
While it may not be popular opinion, Petrino’s ability as a leader to takeover the offense helped Idaho win the many games at home this season.
The best glimpse fans saw of the potential this young team holds happened to be against an FCS top-25 North Dakota team many thought this Idaho team could not handle.
The Vandals were able to overcome adversity throughout the game to come back and win in Idaho’s most memorable game of the season.
If Idaho can play next season like they did against North Dakota, the Vandals can be competitive in its new conference.
Unfortunately, many seniors who have made an impact on the program in their time are leaving this squad.
Some names to look out for next season — linebacker Ty Graham, running back Roshaun Johnson and wide receiver Cutrell Haywood. These players all have a chance to be the leaders in their respected positions to help fill the void with the loss of the graduating seniors.
The continued wide receiver combo of Haywood and Jeff Cotton could be one of the Big Sky’s best next season, giving this young offense another offseason to grow and build chemistry.
It wasn’t the season that many Idaho fans wanted or expected, but maybe, just maybe, it could be in due time.
