Behind a roaring Memorial Gym, Idaho women’s basketball put on a three-point barrage to end exhibition play.
The Vandals won Friday in a dominating fashion, defeating Lewis-Clark State College 97-56.
Idaho got off to a fast start behind the hot shooting of senior guard Mikayla Ferenz.
Ferenz finished the first half scoring 21 points, behind the whole Vandal squad finishing the game with 15 made three-pointers while shooting nearly 47 percent from beyond the arc.
Ferenz finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists, with all action coming only through the first three quarters.
It wasn’t only outside shooting that won this game for the Vandals, but the inside presence of the squad.
Idaho outscored LCSC 38-20 from inside the paint on Friday, showing the inside-out game will be a continued game plan from last season.
The Vandals continued their dominating inside presence through rebounding as well, finishing with 47 rebounds throughout the night compared to the Warrior’s 24.
“We still have to get better at rebounding,” Idaho head coach Jon Newlee said. “Especially with the guys coming up in the next few weeks starting on Tuesday, rebounding is going to be huge.”
Idaho will have a tough two-game stretch this month against Stanford and Texas Tech University, making rebounding a priority for the Vandals if they want to pull of the huge wins against both squads.
A lot of new faces for the Vandals throughout exhibition play, leaving many questions as to what the possible combinations and rotations will be like this season.
“It’s nice because our newcomers are really stepping in and doing a good job,” Newlee said. “It’s nice to have some depth at the guard spot this season since we didn’t have that last year at all. To be able to go to the bench and have production is nice.”
Idaho will kick off the highly anticipated season with a matchup against California State University, Northridge 6 p.m. Nov. 6 in Memorial Gym.
