University of Idaho President Chuck Staben announced Pete Isakson as the interim director of athletics Friday.
Isakson held the role of acting athletic director since former athletic director Rob Spear was put on administrative leave April 3.
“I appreciate the patience of our student-athletes, coaches and staff members through what has been a challenging time,” Staben said in a news release. “I know Vandals strive for excellence in sports and in the classroom, and we are excited about the direction of our athletics program.”
Isakson will be interim athletic director through the remainder of Staben’s time as UI president. It will be in the hands of the next president to select a permanent athletic director, Staben said.
Isakson held the acting athletic director position for four months since Spear was placed on administrative leave.
“Pete is a Vandal through and through, well-qualified and well-suited for this role,” Staben said.
An acting athletic director holds the position of the recently departed permanent athletic director. An interim athletic director holds the position until the role is permanently filled.
In his four months, Isakson aided in the search and subsequent hire of new soccer head coach Jeremy Clevenger. In the upcoming months, Staben said Isakson will continue working with the university toward the Idaho Central Credit Union Arena. He will also address the budget deficit within the athletic department with UI Vice President for Finance and Administration Brian Foisy.
