Idaho wasted no time showing off on its home field, with a number of athletes placing in the top-3 or moving on to the next round of competition.
Sophomore Zachary Short headlined the day with a victory in the men’s shot put. Short claimed the title with a toss of 18.18 meters after starting the meet ranked second in the Big Sky. It is his second title in 2018 after he took first in the event at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. He currently ranks 26th in the west and 50th in the country.
Sophomore Austin Beyer also had a medal-winning performance in the throws. Beyer took third in the men’s javelin with a personal best of 64.63 meters. His previous record was 60.55 meters.
Sophomore Rechelle Meade grabbed the bronze in the women’s long jump with a personal record leap of 5.93 meters. She finishes the season two places higher than she started the competition in only her third competition of the 2018 outdoor season.
Junior Andrea Condie took eighth place in the women’s 10,000-meter race with a 35:27.85. After her performance, Condie ranks 44th in the west and will advance to the NCAA Championships First Round in two weeks.
Junior Erin Hagen and sophomore Krista Story both had strong performances in the 1,500 meters with times qualifying for the finals. Hagen finished with a 4:42.15 and Story finished close behind with a 42:42.45. Freshman Caleb Seely moves on to the men’s 1,500 meters after qualifying with a time of 3:58.16.
Freshman Jenner Higgins moves on to compete in the finals of the men’s 800 meters after a qualifying time of 1:54.67. Junior Kaleala Bass will also compete in the women’s 800 finals after a qualifying time of 2:11.01.
The Big Sky action is set to wrap up at Dan O’Brien Track and Field Complex Friday May 11.
