Olaf said it right when he said, “Oh I’ve always loved the idea of summer, sun and all things hot.”
For many of us, it seems like winter lasted forever and spring has only just begun. But with the weather turning warmer, our thoughts drift to summer break.
The idea of no school, sleeping in, traveling, and even the possibility of sitting on a beach with a cool drink soaking up the sun entices us all as the final weeks of the semester come to an end. For seniors, it might be bittersweet as we say our goodbyes to good old Moscow and know that the memories made here will stay with us forever.
Even as we begin the next chapter of our stories, Moscow will always hold a special place in our hearts. Freshmen are glad to be done with finals week and can’t believe how quickly the time flies when you’re having fun making memories in college. But what happens when summer break actually begins?
Whether you’re home with your parents or home in an apartment in Moscow, there are many adventures and memories to be made in the short period of hot sunny days and warm firelight nights.
When talking with some friends who call Moscow their hometown, they described summers as many different trips, places and taking a break from school. Some talked about sitting outside on the patios of different restaurants downtown or attending the summer Farmer’s Market that students only get a taste of toward the end of spring semester.
The Farmer’s Market is a great place to get fresh produce and fruits for making yummy fruit salads or just as a summertime snack. Others mentioned taking trips to nearby places to enjoy what the surrounding areas have to offer.
While Moscow can be seen as a small town it has quite a few places to go to cool off in the summer. Many people enjoy hiking and swimming at Elk River falls or enjoying some water sports and boating at Dworshak. It’s important to remember to pack your healthy snacks and lots of water too whenever you embark on an adventure.
If you’re looking to explore outside of Moscow it’s only a short drive down to Lewiston or up to Coeur D’ Alene to enjoy what those cities have to offer too. One of the great parts of summer is taking a road trip or two.
Now, not all of us call Moscow our hometown and many of us travel home to take a break. If you’re traveling home, then travel safe and know that you’ll be back sooner than you think. Hopefully, you will be ready to tackle yet another year of school and all the fun that accompanies being a University of Idaho Vandal. But don’t think too far ahead, we aren’t to summer break just yet. If you’re fighting fires this summer, good luck, stay safe and have fun.
If you’re working, then enjoy what you do and hopefully, the time will fly by until you get to spend time with friends. Summer break is almost here and while there are fun things to do in Moscow, or wherever you’re calling home this summer, what really matters most is the people you spend your time with.
So, hang in there until that last final exam is over and you can officially say you have completed yet another year or that you have graduated. Congratulations to all of the seniors graduating this semester, and to those who are continuing with their education; keep on dreaming, believing and growing in your journey as it gets closer to the next chapter in your story. Summer is a time to take a break, relax and enjoy the nice weather, good company and make memories along the way.
Even during summer though we still need to take care of ourselves. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting enough sleep or keeping that gym routine up.
It’s time to relax and take a break but still, remember to take care of you and your health. Best of luck Vandals and Enjoy the summer break!
