The Vandal women’s basketball team extended their win streak to six games with a dominant win over the Sacramento State Hornets Saturday in the Cowan Spectrum.
Behind big games from junior guard Mikayla Ferenz, senior post Geraldine McCorkell and junior guard Taylor Piece, the Vandals stomped out the Hornets 101-66.
Throughout the course of the night Idaho was electrifying, scoring 101 points in total. The Vandals took a swift lead in the first quarter and did not relent until the half time mark. Idaho shot 50 percent in the first quarter from behind the arc, going 5 for 10.
Idaho led Sacramento State 25-15 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter continued to go well for the Vandals as they remained hot from behind the three-point line. Idaho 10-22 from behind the line in the first half of play, including 6-9 shooting from behind the arc from Pierce who moved into second all time in three point shots made for the Vandals.
At the end of the first half Idaho led 50-27. While Sacramento State continued to apply full court pressure throughout the first half, it simply did not phase the Vandal offense. The Vandals shot extremely well from behind the arc and they played a fast tempo game that the Sacramento State press could not stop.
During the second quarter the Vandals went on two separate scoring runs. The first of the two lasting for just over five minutes where the Vandals scored 11 points to Sacramento State’s zero. The second was a 9-0 run for the Vandals to close out the first half, with Idaho leading 50-27.
The second half of play proved to be equally as good as the first for the Vandals. At the end of the third quarter, Idaho led 79-48. While Sacramento State continued to pressure the Vandals during the entirety of the second half, Idaho kept the points coming.
Idaho was persistent about scoring throughout the game and did not yield for the Hornet’s defense at any point during the game maintaining their lead through the entirety of the time.
“Yeah, night and day from our game in Sacramento for sure, I thought our team really came out motivated tonight at the beginning and focused on what we wanted to do from a defensive stand point and I thought that really fueled our offense,” Idaho Head Coach Jon Newlee said. “To play well again here at home is crucial in this league. We just have to continue to come out with the effort we had tonight.”
