The University of Idaho Faculty Senate voted to approve the Annual Evaluation Form and Policy during Tuesday’s meeting, which was presented to them by Marty Ytreberg from Faculty Affairs Oct. 24. There was some opposition the form itself and polices within the forms.
Senators were informed on student privacy regarding educational records and laws UI must follow. An educational record is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Protections Act (FERPA), which became law in 1974. An educational record is defined as any record that is directly related to a student and/or is kept by an educational institution. FERPA requires a written and signed release for students so universities can collect and utilize photos, videos and other records of them.
Registrar Heather Chermak encouraged senators that if a faculty or staff member was to record a class session for use in a future class, they should focus the video on the instructor and the material, rather than the students. Chermak said the use of full names of students during the video should also be avoided. According to Chermak, audio recordings of students talking during a video have not been deemed a FERPA violation by the UI.
